Pay-Less Markets receives NGA Exceptional Independents Award

Friday, April 14, 2022- Hagåtña, Guam - Payless Markets is the recipient of Shelby Publishing's inaugural Exceptional Independents Award in February during a reception held at the Caesars Forum Convention Center in Las Vegas. The event was held by the National Grocers Association (NGA) who brings together retailers and wholesalers, food retail industry executives, food manufacturers, and service providers for unparalleled opportunities to learn, engage, share, network and innovate. Qualifications are related to independents' investment in their stores or companies, commitment to supporting neighborhood charities and community involvement, and investment in their employees' training and advancement.

"Independents are the backbone of our industry and this awards program is an opportunity to recognize them for their contributions," said Stephanie Reid, president of Shelby Publishing. "Independents are a vital part of their communities and lead the way in caring for their customers. Our Exceptional Independents Awards will shine a light on these businesses that continue to help feed our communities."

These grocers are "critical to the success, health and well-being of communities and the individuals who live there," said Greg Ferrera, president and CEO of the National Grocers Association. According to Ferrera, exceptional independent grocers don't just sell, "they engage, educate and inspire." They are aware of the unique needs of their communities, as evidenced by their product assortment and level of service.

"And their visibility in the community, through support and involvement in local groups, events and activities, demonstrates their commitment to the health and success of their neighbors," he said. It is important to recognize these exceptional independents because they are "examples of excellence for the industry and the community, and the hard work of their owners, managers, and associates makes them role models of service and innovation," Ferrera said.
